As time went on, Pomona became well-known as a leader in the Citrus Industry and railway construction further propelled agricultural growth in Pomona. An interesting fact about the name “Pomona” is that it refers to the Roman goddess of orchards and gardens. A gentleman and horticulturist named Soloman Gates selected “Pomona” as his entry in 1875’s name of the city contest. After winning the contest, The Los Angeles Immigration & Land Co-Operative Association formally adopted “Pomona” as the city’s name in 1877. Later, per the City Charter, Pomona was incorporated in 1888.
