Located in Southern California, is approximately 23 square miles. The city is roughly 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, 26 miles west of Riverside, 27 miles north of Santa Ana (northern Orange County), and 33 miles west of San Bernardino. Located within Pomona Valley, a valley between the San Gabriel Valley and the Inland Empire, Pomona is great for recreational activities. The area also contains a rich history, having been a pivotal part of Native American trade routes from the mid-1500s to the early 1800s. Ricardo Vejar and Ygnacio Palomares first founded Pomona in the 1830s. The land's rich, fertile soil was ideal for growing crops so there was an abundance of citrus orchards and olive groves. As time went on, Pomona became well-known as a leader in the Citrus Industry and railway construction further propelled agricultural growth in Pomona. An interesting fact about the name “Pomona” is that it refers to the Roman goddess of orchards and gardens. A gentleman and horticulturist named Soloman Gates selected “Pomona” as his entry in 1875’s name of the city contest. After winning the contest, The Los Angeles Immigration & Land Co-Operative Association formally adopted “Pomona” as the city’s name in 1877. Later, per the City Charter, Pomona was incorporated in 1888. The Mediterranean climate that is ideal for agricultural endeavors also provides the community with enjoyably hot, dry summers, mild winters, and sunshine year-round.

In the aftermath of World War II, American soldiers came home victorious and used the GI Bill to build millions of homes on the outskirts of America's cities. These houses were mostly Cape Cods and ranches, modest in size, but they served as a symbol of the growing middle-class in 20th century America. Pomona's housing was constructed primarily during this period, from the 1940s through the 1960s. In fact, 47.27% of all housing in Pomona dates back to this era. Other housing ages represented in Pomona include homes built between 1970 and 1999 (33.35%) and those constructed before 1939 (11.74%). There is also a smaller percentage of housing in Pomona that was built between 2000 and the present day (7.64%).
